Kerala State Remote Sensing and Environment Center was established in 1995 as an autonomous body of Govt. of Kerala for carrying out research, training and other related activities in the field of application of remote sensing in land and land resource management and environmental monitoring and upkeep. The centre is recognized as the nodal agency for remote sensing by the Department of Space.

  1. Inventory, appraisal and management of land resources with special emphasis on environment making use of remote sensing techniques.

  2. To co-ordinate and promote planning and development activities on resource and environment management.

  3. To provide training on the application of remote sensing in development programmes.

  4. To co-operate and collaborate with other State/National/International agencies in the related fields to enhance the potential.

  1. Integrated Mission for Sustainable Development (IMSD) more.....

This is a National Project of the Department of Space. The Project envisages to assess the resources of the selected districts as watersheds and to identify the problems and prospects of resource management of the area and to generate area specification plan for sustainable development, conservation and management of natural resources.

    Project Coordinator : S.Chandramohan
      : R.Sanalkumar

  2. Wasteland Mapping Project more.....

The objective of the study is to identify and map the locations and the extent of various types of waste land as per the definitions and categories developed by national Wasteland Development Board on 1:50000 scale showing the village boundaries using satellite imageries. All districts were covered in two phases.

    Project Coordinator : S.Chandramohan

  3. Survey of Potential and Actual Area Under Sericulture Through Remote Sensing (SPAARS)

The study is funded by Central Silk Board. Ministry Of Textiles, Govt. of India and coordinated by Regional Remote Sensing Service Centre (RRSSC/ISRO) Bangalore.
The study has been undertaken to assess/estimate the areas suitable for sericulture development in six districts namely Alappuzha, Idukki, Kannur, Malappuram, Palakkad and Waynad, of Kerala in 1:250000 scale. Project has been completed.

    Project Coordinator : S.Chandramohan
      : A.Nizamudeen

  4. Grama panchayat Level Water Scooping Study

The project aims at ground water source finding and planning of sustainable drinking water schemes in the selected four grama panchayats in Thrissur and Malappuram districts. The objective of the study is to carryout a water resource scooping analysis for the grama panchayats and prepare a water resource map showing hydrological characters and to give an account of the hydrological condition, surface flow, ground surface water potential recharge capabilities, drainage and soil conditions.

    Project Coordinator : S.Chandramohan
      : A.Nizamudeen

  5. National (Natural) Resources Information Systems.(NRIS)

The project is to provide an integrated database for the use of remotely sensed data and collateral information in the framework of a spatial information system. The project is ongoing in Trissur and palakkad districts.

    Project Coordinator : A.Nizamudeen

  6. Rajiv Gandhi National Drinking Water Mission Project

The main objective of the project is to generate a scientific database for ground water on appropriate scale towards scientific source finding of ground water for all the non-covered (NC) and partially covered (PC) habitations and to provide necessary information for selection of sites for construction of recharge structures to improve the sustainability of drinking water sources, wherever required.

    Project Coordinator : S.Lali

  7. Spatial Assessment of Land Use Pattern of Kerala

The major objectives of the project are preparation of thematic map of existing land use pattern on 1:50000 scale and to estimate the are a under different categories of land use.

    Project Coordinator : S.Edison

  8. Sustainable Development Plan for Panchayats (Integrated Resources Management Plan)

The objective of the project is to generate reliable data base of the available land resource on 1:5000 scale using the technique of remote sensing, to identify the problems and potentialities of the panchyats and to generate Integrated Resource Management Plan for sustainable development. The panchyats are pookottoor and Nediyirippu of Malappuram district.

    Project Coordinator : S.Chandramohan
      : A.Nizamudeen
